Hi, I've got a 1.5 almera with an 85% kerb weight of 1071 kgs. (1000kg braked tow wight)
I'm seriously considering buying a 1999 Pennine sterling 535 SE.
I think i'm right in saying that the sterling has a 640Kg unladen and a 900kg Gross weight.

So do i need a bigger car to tow this folding camper or am i ok with my Almera?

The Almeira should pull a Pennine Sterling OK.

Yes the 1999 Sterling has a ex works weight of 640kg and max laden weight of 900kg

If your 85% of the Almeria's kerb weight is 1071kgs then you'll have no problems. If its a 1.5 diesel Almeria you'll definately have no problems and might have to keep looking back to remind yourself its there!

At 1071 kgs you could consider even a Pennine Pathfinder with its max gross weight of 1045kg (820kg unladen) and still be within the 85% rule.

We used to pull ours with a 1.4 Escort and never had any problems.

Hi, for info my wife has a 2002 1.5 Almera petrol, 51,000miles. Pulling a van at 80%  we have had hot clutch smell on long hills indicating slight clutch slip.  We live in the country so clutch gets less use than a town car. I do not know if clutch is a weak point on the Almera but we now use a Mondeo for towing.
