Just wanted to know what the general consensus of opinion is on how old 2 brothers need to be to have their own small tent pitched next to ours. They are 7 and 4 years old (too early yet I know), but how many years are we looking at???

Thanks
Liz

All children are different

They will let you know when they are ready,  7 year old any time from now, especially if it gets him his own space.

Your job is to only allow it when you consider he is ready for it and where you are is suitable for it.

Have the answers ready before you get the question.

My son was 10 when we gave him a pup tent for his birthday. He still hasn't slept in it solo though. He thinks it's a bit lonely.

I would think 10 was a fair enough age for a pup tent. The child/children have to be old enough to understand they mustn't go and wander off in the night and have to keep the noise down after curfew. Also, they'll need to be able to navigate across you your tent and use the bucket, or at least tell you they're off to the tolilet block. And that's before you even consider any danger fom outside...and a lot of that will depend on the specific campsite.

I think given that you have two boys the younger one will want to go in the pup tent the same day the older one does, so...8 & 11 as a ballpark figure?

I dont think i would let my girls sleep in one of their own until they 35 (very over-protective mother syndrome)

I let them have the pup tent in the awning to begin with. A bit cramped, but, they thought it was right grown up!!

I have 3 (2 girls and 1 boy)that are now ranging from 19 to 27 and they were all about 10 or 11 when they first went in a tent on their own. Each of them had to have a tent so you can imagine the size of the pitch I needed to get them all on.

We are going to let our 8 year old sleep in a pup tent in the awning (his own space within our space).

Carpe Diem

Started in Tents, then trailer Tent and now Caravan.

My son was 9 last year and met up with a friend who slept in the awning and ds asked if he could do the same.  He has slept one night since then with us and the rest in the awning.  He loves to have his own space and being able to go to sleep when he wants and more importantly wake up when he wants without disturbing anyone else.

Do what you feel is right for your son.
