hi everyone, can i buy a 12v/mains blow heater for my FC.we would like to use our FC through to the end of the season and beyond if possible, any advice would be greatfuly accepted.
To heat a camper you need approx 2 Kw of heat. to my knowledge you cannot get a 12volt heater which will put out sufficient heat. The cheap option is to buy a small 240 volt fan heater but you will need to hook up to a 10 amp supply.
Call me over cautious when it comes to gas heaters , but why bother when you have a ready supply of heat from the gas rings/ oven whenever you dont have a hook up facility ?
We have simply turned on the gas rings for heat at times and the effect is intsant
Burning gas in a confined space has a couple of unpleasant side effects. Condensation, & waste gas produced by combustion. These are Carbon Dioxide - if you have sufficient ventilation or Carbon Monoxide if you don't. This has been discussed at length on the equipment section. Only burn gas indoors if there is adequate ventlation. Carbon Monoxide is a killer. It works by putting you to sleep so you never find out about it. In addition, be careful of radiated heat. Gas & electric heaters throw off enough heat to set fire to fabric & wooden items too close. Use either a fan heater if on EHU available for around £20 or a purpose built gas heater for a camper with waste gas vented outside via a flue. These are not cheap, several hundred pounds each for any of those on the market. Avoid the small portable gas heaters for the reasons above. Other than that, wear warm clothes, get a good sleeping bag or don't camp outside Easter - October.
We have aquired a selection of heaters for camping over the years ,Halogen -instant heat, but glaring light, and no thermostat control, wouldn't like to leave unattended/can't leave on overnight.(2 types in the attic). The fan heater option- noisy and annoying,(3 types in the attic-from basic to thermastatic-hot/cold,swive ceramic types) The gas ones we have bought tried once and sold quickly. The best type we have found is the 700 watt mini radiator from 'dunhelm mill' 2 settings low-high ,thermostatic controlled. This simple little oil-filled radiator has been used as a constant background heater day and night. We have used it in our canvas trailer tent, dandy destiny, motorhome and campervan, Our verdict being we wish we had bought this first ,at the time of purchase 16-99 (5 years ago).
