I have been searching for ferry passage to take my set up to France this summer. The ferry companies ask if the trailer is a "baggage trailer or a caravan". Does anyone have advice as to which ferry company to use and if to lass it as a baggage trailer or a caravan. I'm considering Portsmouth to Le Havre.  Thanks in advance.

I always claim it to be a baggage trailer, as we keep most of our gear in it. Your pennine is certainly not a caravan. The question is really about overall length. You might have to pay more for a caravan.
Never had any trouble on Norfolk lines or Stena but cannot speak for your particular route.

Always a trailer.
Cheapest way over is Norfolk Lines Dover Dunkirk ... but longer drive ... depending on where you are going.
I find the saving is worth the extra miles.

we have booked the Portsmouth -Le Havre route with our FC for July but through the  camping and caravan club  (cheaper this way) and it states caravan on our booking letter though when I checked there was no difference in price had we gone the trailer option as it just asks height and lenght which remains the same whether as a caravan or trailer with this company.

Would always book as a trailer otherwise and choose the right lengths and height leaving the rest up to the ferry company

Thanks you all for giving the info.

Nothing like hindsight, I am probably going via the Potsmouth - Le Havre route, I went to their site and did 2 test booking, 1 as a FC and the other as a caravan, they are , as you rightly say "andcow", the same. Yer live n' learn.....;))

ARe you a member of the C and CC club as they are 5% cheaper than the ferries own site in cost.  Not a lot I know but we also used them to book the site we wanted and were going to anyway!   We were already members though

Hey Up andcow

No, I'm not a member, although based on the discount potential and getting the subscription back, it is something I am seriously considering.

Booking for trailers are for total lenght of combo(car and trailer) after a certain lenght the price goes up but for this to happen you would have to have van with twin axles, 25ft van plus a car. o

it is around £40 a year and as said 5% off ferry bookings plus there are the club sites which are nice, the CL sites which are cheap (not used as a bit basic for me) and a monthly mag though not that inspiring I have to say!  lol

You can get cheap insurance and money off RAC and things like that too though we have found just as cheap other ways.
