Hi
Been looking at the price and size of the front storage boxes as my TT is a few years old now spending nearly £300 on a box seems a little over the top. I have seen the garden boxes used but personally I don't like that idea from either a strength or looks point of view.
This lead me to wonder about making one myself. I understand weight could be an issue so my question is has anybody either made or seen a home made wooden storage box on a TT, do you have any designs or do you all think it would just be too heavy even to consider?
Regards
Graham
I have just finished building a wooden storage box for my Raclet trailer tent and tested it last week on my first weeks camp of this year.
It was constructed with 9mm plywood and joined using the stitch and glue boat building method (I could try to explain this but may be easier if you google it!).
The box is big enough to hold a chemical toilet, 3 way quest fridge and 4.5kg gas bottle along with many other smaller items such as chocks, scissor jack, levelling blocks etc.
I was very pushed for size with regards to the depth of the box fitting on to the a-frame as my trailer tent is braked which takes up more room on the drawbar, and only just managed to get it big enough to fit the fridge in. This is the main reason I used the stitch and glue method as it save the need for wooden joists inside the box which would have meant the fridge would not have fitted inside.
In my opinion, I would say the box is of very strong construction, does not get in the way when towing or erecting the trailer tent, and is lighter than the original metal box I had, and all in build costs were about £75.00.
I will be able to post photos in the next few days if you would like to know more.
That sounds like a brilliant idea, when I made a box for mine, the inside frame took up too much room so now I use a tote box from Homebase.Look forward to the pictures.
Why not build a box from plastic sheets, Using similar plastic "L" shaped cornice and rivet it together? This should be robust enought and waterproof it sealed with mastic. Not tried it but am thinking of doing it this way on my folding caravan.
I'll be adding pictures either very late tonight when I finish work or otherwise in the morning of the plywood box I made.
I have now decided to go over to the other side and managed to purchase a caravan yesterday within my budget and very local to myself, so will now be selling the trailer tent.
If anyone is interested I am planning to sell the wooden box separatly and will re-fit the original smaller box back on the trailer tent. I would be looking for about £125 for the wooden box, this is to cover the cost of materials and reflect the many hours I put into building it.
If anybody is interested, I will list it on the bay of E! But am also more than happy just to give out more information if needed to explain/show how it was made.
I just bought a 2nd hand TT and the guy I bought it off had put one of those green garden storage boxes on. Never had one on the old TT. To be honest I don't like the look of it and it's so big he had to extend the towing hitch so it clears the car when turning. It's bloody handy though, I'd thought of replacing it with a smaller, purpose made one until I saw the price of them. Gonna look around for something else that fits the bill.
Hopefully some pictures should be shown as promised (I haven't added pics before now on here!) The box is almost finished, just needs another coat of paint on the outside, and varnishing inside. It is very lightweight, but incredibly strong, and gives about the right amount of noseweight on the trailer tent for towing.
We bought a small Raclet box which seems quite good and add surprisingly good amount of storage. I need room to stand on the A-frame to connect some of the poles so would be stuffed if we had a bigger box. Also we want to carry bikes on a towball bikerack so need a smaller box to give more clearnace.
