we have just booked a few holidays in our new trailer tent. Both the sites my wife spoke to were quite surprised that we did not ask for an EHU plot, especially the one where we are staying for two weeks in June.
This is our first year with a trailer tent, previously we had a Bear Lake 6 and never even thought about getting a EHU.
As part of the Kitchen which comes with the Trailer tent, there is a fridge, this runs on Gas or electric, and we were planning to run it off gas.
Lighting is going to be by Battery lantern, cooking by Gas hob, no TV/Phone charging DVD player or PC.
Just wanted to make sure we were not missing something, as most on here seem to use EHU, but i could be mistaken here
I would run the fridge on ehu it might be cheaper an i read somewhere that to run on gas the fridge has to be level not sure about that but i am sure someone will be along to tell us

Club site hook ups are at least £3 per night,so gas may be cheaper for just a fridge. We do either all electric or none depending on the time of year. I have to admit,it feels a bit more like camping with the gas lamps running and a proper kettle on the stove.

If you are using only gas then you are missing out, especially for longer stays at a site ( overnight stops less so)
We found that using electric fridge, electric kettle and lighting, saved a considerable amount of gas.
We were using, on average, 2.5 x Campingaz 907 each season of about 90 nights. Using ehu, where possible, we have used less than one cylinder in 2 years.
Now that we've got an electric mini oven, convector heater and electric kettle plus the lights can run off the electric rather than a battery we would now struggle without EHU, but to be honest if you set yourself up right you can manage quite well without it.
(And now that we use EHU my wife's even done a bit of ironing every now and again with a travel iron and of course our own hair dryer is much better than the ones you usually get in the washrooms)
We got EHU when we were using a tent. On one trip the tent field was flooded, so we had a grass pitch with EHU, and it was bigger, clearly defined, and nearer the toilets! So we had a look at electric coolboxes and realised that taking into account what we were paying for freezing our freezer blocks we wouldn't be much worse off paying for electricity. We are still equipped for non EHU and do that sometimes, but much prefer having electric lighting, and a power source to feed the kids techno addiction!
EHU may enable you to extend your season as gives you the ability to run fan heater in the colder temps, have used gas heaters but don't think they are as safe as fan heater.
We run fridge and electric coolbox so cuts down on shopping trips.
Have found electric pitches more regimented you have more freedom of where to pitch going without EHU.
Was really impressed with the flyer when I went down to Black Country the weekend bet you cant wait for May
Thanks for the replies,
so essentially, if we want to do cold weather camping! then the ability to run a heater off the ehu would make this possible, (possibly these are safer than gas heaters)
I agree with you miserly that it feels more like real camping with gas and battery powered equipment. I have a very old "primus" stove that i still use, for similar reasons, when we are out walking to make a brew. The wife's not to keen on using it but when you get it going, its absolutely fantastic.
AlisonBob yes very excited, only about 8 weeks until we pick it up. Have you noticed if you look on the Holtkamper site, and look at the dutch page, there are a few more very interesting options. Use google chrome, and it will translate it for you (Sort of).

Evenstephen, your wife has done ironing!
Tell her to cease and desist from this at once, ironing is not a holiday activity!
I did say the occassional bit. When you're away for five weeks you do need to do a bit of washing. I would be happy to put something on a bit creased but she does have standards. I can't stop her!
We are away for 12 weeks and had to spend a fortune on non iron/crease resistant clothes....I wanted her to iron but she says its her holiday too....some women are so selfish
We have been using an EHU for many years with tent & trailer tent. As a lot of that has been in France an EHU is very useful as our fridge was using about a bottle of gas per holiday. Plus the electric kettle is so handy in the morning.
Also if camping at either end of the season the electric heaters & lights are a must.
It is even handy for watching the odd DVD during the long dark evenings.
My OH would not camp without it as she would have nothing to charge her i-phone, etc & my DD loved been able to use a hair drier when she camped with us.
We all have our own styles of camping (I often backpack - without EHU)but is definitely worth the cost.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
