Going on holiday on Friday, so stripped out TT to wash and iron everything. First time using the TT, so whilst I had the iron out, I had this thought "lets run the steam generator iron over the foam to sterilise it a bit".
I didn't let the hot plate touch the foam (for a second time), just the steam and something magical happened.

We've run the iron over the whole of the foam, was like a sweat shop in here - but its plumped up all the foam a treat.
We were going to replace at a cost of £100, but with a steam generator iron, and a bit of time have got great results.
If you try it at home, DO NOT let the hot plate touch the foam (I haven't included that picture haha) I reckon a conventional iron would work, but you woud have to do horizontally, we were able to do vertically as well.
Well chuffed

------------- As a child my families menu consisted of two choices: take it or leave it.
had a look on the internet, and re upholsterers do it for car seats. Appears the almost honeycomb structure compacts over time, the steam encourages it to bounce back to its normal shape and the spaces refill with air.
I'm under no doubt with use it will compact again, but the new foam would over time anyway. In some places is was so flat it was uncomfortable, but now it is much comfier and isn't just an aesthetic improvement - the structure contains air again, therefore it does have its spring back.
My friend has a garment steamer, I'm going to have a go at my car seats where the bolster wears down getting in and out

Lockie, yeah I guess that would work, bit messy though as all wallpaper strippers i've ever used spit water everywhere.
Boatent, I finished the last piece today. I turned the iron down and was able to run it over the foam without scorching. There were a few dribbles, but would leave a few days just in case of an accident but they never felt wet to me even after just finishing - but obviously will let them dry anyway

Excellent idea,
the foam mattresses in our 'new to us' tt stank when we got it, spent weeks spraying them with febreeze and airing them in garden, living room and anywhere in the sun.... they have improved vastly but am going to try the hand held steamer on a piece of it. The price of replacing the foam is soo expensive...... Thank you for sharing your discovery.
