Hi, any ideas on carrying bikes on our sunncamp 350 se. What about the effect of the weight on the trailer etc. any ideas welcome. We currently use a car rack that holds three bikes (two adults one child's) and we strap another kids one on top of the trailer. Interested in a tow bar one or something to attach on to the trailer like a Conway style one?
you need to work out the max your TT can carry. For instance, mine has max weight of 450kg, but the TT laiden as standard is 335kg, giving me 115kg to play with.
Deduct all the extra items I put in, I had roughly 70kg to play with. I'm taking 2 adults and one child bike on my carrier, both adult bikes are around 40kgs combined, plus child bike of 10kgs.
That leaves me with 20kgs for the weight of the luggage rack. Its tubular steel and is quite light, but puts me very close to my limit.
If you have a tow ball mounted cycle carrier, then you have to factor in nose weight (the downward push of the weight of the TT on the tow ball). This weight, added to the bikes may put you over your nose weight limit.
Am sure someone will come along and blind you with science, but that was my understanding of it.
If you haven't already, you could look at roof bars with cycle carriers?? I didn't know what to do at one point, so I bought the luggage rack and the roof bars.
Shopped around on fleabay, I got genuine Ford roof bars, TT luggage rack and Exodus roof box for under £200. Hope I haven't confused you even more, but the roof option is one to look at if your not using it already.
------------- As a child my families menu consisted of two choices: take it or leave it.
Have a look here. I've used one for four years, and find it brilliant.
Yes, you need to know your car's recommended tow ball max weight .... then subtract the weight of the Maxxraxx and bikes from that, which will leave you with a balance to take care of the nose weight of what you are towing.
As a rough guide, the nose weight of what you are towing should be between 4% and 7% of the towed vehicle's weight (when fully loaded).
