I have a 2006 Pathfinder which I bought last year and I think it would be best if I have it serviced before is start to use it this year to make sure mainly that the mechanics are safe when towing etc.

Is it simply a case of booking a service with a caravan service company?

Do I need to have the electric and gas checked as well as the mechanics of the trailer?

I'm new to all this so any advice on what to do would be appreciated.......

When we had ours we had a self-employed mobile caravan service guy come to us to do it and it cost around £120.

I opened everything up so that he could do the internal gas, damp and electrical checks then folded it back up so that he could do the external gas pressure check and give the running gear the once-over. He found a small leak in the gas system which was down to a faulty connector and that was replaced at no cost. I also had him check the brakes completely which involved stripping down the wheel hubs and replacing the one-shot nuts (adding a few quid to the basic price). Everything else was just checked and re-greased.

Now we have a new caravan we'll be taking it to the dealer for it's service - an eye-watering £279!

No legal requirement to get it done (incredibly) but always worth a check, periodically, for peace of mind more than anything. Never does any harm to have the gas and electrics checked as well. Let's face it, if the brakes failed on the motorway, it would be dangerous, but, hopefully, not a disaster, compared to a gas leak near naked flames or a faulty 240V electrical system, so, if having it checked, anyway, I would go the whole hog. Prices vary a lot, and I would agree, a smaller, self employed engineer will often do just as good a job, for a lot less cost.
