Curious if this is a common thing? Does anyone else get hot water from the cold tap for a few seconds before it goes cold again?

Its not residual water in the tap, as it runs cool to start, then warm up, and cool again.

Is it something to do with the pressure in the system?

I did have it in a caravan. The pump pushes water through the cold pipe to the tap and also into the water heater via a tee connector. The water flowing into the water heater starts the water moving and momentum results in hot water flowing out of the cylinder into the cold water pipe and on to the tap. The tee was very close to the water heater with only about 6 inches of pipe.

The dealer couldn't do anything and really didn't know what was happening.

I tried fitting a non return valve which didn't do much. Increasing the length of pipe from the tee connector to the water heater sorted it to an acceptable level although not completely.
