I used the information here to work out what the tyre pressures were for the 2012 Solena with the following tyres:
165 65 R 8 73M max pressure= 4.8 bar (69.6 psi)
where
165= tyre width in mm
65= aspect ratio in % (cross section to width)
R= radial
8= Diameter of rim in inches
73= load index (73= 360kg per tyre)
M= Max speed of 81mph
The formula in the link above says:
Pressure in the tyre equals:
Max pressure of tyre in psi, divided by (Max load rating of each tyre in kg, multiplied by Number of tyres), all multiplied by total weight of trailer.
Here's what that worked out to for my Solena data above:
Fully Laden:
(70psi / 2x 360kg) x 400kg = 38psi or 2.6 bar
Partially Laden:
(70psi / 2x 360kg) x 350kg = 34psi or 2.3 bar
Now that's an awful lot different from 69psi!
What are you running yours at? Do please comment from experience since I haven't yet tested the theory out!
Ah, well, the thing is you see, that Raclet have simply printed the tyre maker's MAX pressure...not the working pressure dependent on load. Your car tyres will have a Max pressure on them but I'm sure you won't want to run them at that!
Put simply, if the tyres are inflated to 69.6psi they will be pressured to support a load WAY in excess of the 400kg max total weight for the Solena, resulting in wear on the apexes...the only bit in contact with the road, haha!
What you say appears to be correct. Wonder why they fit tyres so overrated unless the trailer is so light they just don't make tyres for that weight. Makes sense.
