BUT: the door has appeared a bit worn and when we got home we found that it is out of alignment. It looks very much as if we'll have to replace it. Any suggestions?

Measure across diagonals of the unit to see if it's square.
Then use the corner steadies to see if that affects any misalignment.
See if the increased pressure of the steady brings the body back into alignment.
