Enlighten me all those who have been going to camp sites for years and years - why do we have to pay extra for an awning? Surely we are already paying for the pitch as a whole and that is 'our' space for the duration. Does it matter how much we put up? When travelling with the TT we argued that as we had nowhere to put cooker etc or eat under cover it formed an integral part of the unit and got away with that. Now we have the Conway Cruiser (which even with awning will come up at half the size) we will have to pay to put up the awning on the same pitch we used before!
Does anyone konw or understand the reasoning behind this! I understand paying extra by body because of use of facilities and if we were taking a much larger pitch but when it's a standard pitch size?

I think some sites like to squeeze as many units in as possible, so charge extra for awnings as they can't get as many units on the field (I don't agree with the practice - I like my 20 foot gap, so I like C&CC sites that enforce the spacing). What I don't understand is why sites with hard standing charge extra for awnings - they can't get the units any closer together, whether they have awnings or not! They are just money-grabbing, and I try to avoid them.

This is exactly what I mean! On a site with unmarked pitches fair enough but all the ones I've been to have marked pitches so you don't take up any more space.

Like I said - money-grabbing! It's like Carry On Camping - £1 for the tent, £1 per person, £1 for a washing line, £1 to join (members only!!), etc, etc!
we have found that most ampsites havent got a clue as to folding campers so we book in as a trailer tent then the awning is classed as part of the living space, just dont make it to obvious that you could manage without it!
do you think that we could get away with a tent for the dog on the sites he gets charged for? !!!!!!
what the hell does he use, reckon I ll ask to take him in the showers, if we are being charged for him, one bowl of water a day is all he uses £2 for the water!!!
I refuse to use sites that charge extra for dogs, extra for awnings and extra for anything else they can think of or invent!
I have so far found that sites that don't make extra charges are owned by nicer people and the campers are nearly always friendly too.
I must remember Rizzo's advice about most sites not knowing the difference between TTs and FCs!
What I object to most is the ridiculous prices some small, very basic sites think they should charge. We went to one last year who charged £7 per night and the 'site', if it could even vaguely be classed as that, was about 2' high in many places of nettles, thistles and grass. Then the hose pipe was full of earwigs - good job my son thought to run the tap before putting the hose into the aquaroll!! To cap it all there were peacocks that we had to constantly shoo away as they kept landing on the car - great for the paintwork! We lasted 2 nights and then moved on. Don't worry, this site is'nt in the C&CC sites book this year - wonder why!
Thing is Caz, we love basic camping - a farm site in the back of beyond, listening to all the wild animals at night, not having EHU, showers, flushing loos etc BUT I do put my foot down on wretched peacocks trying to trash the paintwork on my car!!
The owner did get sued as the peacocks wrecked the bonnet and roof of a new Volvo - oops! It's a shame the site got into the state it was in as it could be really lovely.
Give us a small, quiet site anyday. And we're getting close to nature hopefully this Bank Holiday!

P.S. Just looked out my window and guess what? My FC has turned into a TT overnight!
Whenever I pulled on to a site with my Conway Countryman, the site owners used to take one look and say "Oh, it's a trailer tent" and cross out "Camper" in the reservation list (suppose they thought I'd meant a campervan when I booked). They never asked whether I had an awning, whereas when I had a caravan they always did if it was extra.
As it happens, I never ever put the awning up anyway, & I used to get cross when they referred to my lovely camper as a tent, but I suppose there could be advantages..........

we use C&CC DA sites also their temp holiday sites, you only pay for your unit, so no charge for our awning or for the dog, plus you get the 20 foot rule, most times the fields during the year are quite, camped at one 5 up site a few times last year in the New Forest and 2 weekends we were the only unit their,have tried the hi di hi sites not for us like the back to basic fields, fills more like camping to us, off coarse that is only my opinion.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
