We have bought a trailer tent which didn't come with a spare wheel.
We have now bought a new wheel for the spare. But I cant help but think instead of the brand new wheel sitting there just in case why not replace the old wheels and have 2 new wheels on the trailer then use one of the old ones as a spare wheel.
Does this seem sensible or am I just making hard work for myself?

depends ont he cost of buying another new wheel I guess, or you could just get the exsisting wheels reburbed

Depends if you mean wheels or tyres,

I resprayed my rims with a tin of specific paint took maybe an hour including a bit of sanding and masking and they came up pretty good.

But it may be worth dating the current tyres as they could.be older than you presume. Most tyre places will fit them

If you have bought one new wheel/tyre then yes, buy another & have 2 new tyres then you are ok for 5yrs. Your existing tyres may be much older. Over 5/6 yrs old & it's better to replace tyres as matter of course as they could be perished & fail at motorway speeds.

How old are they, anything over 5 years I'd change them. They stand a lot, and hopefully in the sunshine. Have a great time using it.

Having seen loads of trailers / caravans stuck on the hard shoulder due to their tyres giving up the ghost I would replace the tyres if they are coming up to 5 years old or have visible signs of deterioration such as sidewall cracking etc. You can age a tyre using the date code which is stamped on the sidewall usually in a 4 number code ie 3010 which means the 30th week of 2010.

Trailer tyres lead a hard life sitting still for a lot of time exposed to UV and being run on units with primitive suspension. It is usually a lot less hassle/stress/dangerous to change them as a consumable rather than on a how long can we go basis.

We have just replaced two 8" wheels and tyres on our baggage trailer at a cost of £52. As the trailer won't be used over the winter, we won't change them over until we come to use it next year.
