We are taking our camper, a 1995 Conway Cruiser, to France this year and just wondering what is best to book in as a caravan or trailer as there is quite a saving if booked as the latter.
It's not a caravan, it's a trailer which is probably not as tall as your car so you can go in the lower part of the ferry or train and pay the lower rate.
There may be times when you see a free crossing for caravans offered on certain trips. When we had a folding camper I found that sometimes it would be cheaper to book as a car and caravan than book as a car and trailer but I didn't make a booking in the end as our plans changed. I would have been interested to see the reaction when I arrived at the terminal with a caravan only 1.2m high.
Probably also depends on the ferry company and their classifications. I can;t remember which one, but one I used actually defined a trailer as up to 3m long, so I had no choice but to book it in as the smallest caravan they had (which was up to 1.5m tall - so not many actual caravans would fit into that category anyway). While I know you pay more, at least it does mean you don’t get stuck in some far corner of the ferry and take ages to get off. Dieppe to Newhaven I have spend an hour getting off in just a car, whereas since we started towing we are normally about the 5th car off the ferry (once we were the very first)

Thanks for all the advice folks, after a bit more exploring on google I can book as a trailer on the tunnel and on most ferries subject to size and height restrictions.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
