Hi, all I've just bought a folding camper 1992 Conway Cardinal Clubman, never had anything like this before just conventional tents so I'm very much a novice.

It's a great unit and good condition but there is a rust and corrosion (so far a very small hole) on what looks like the spring cylinder (this was from a google search, may not be but it's a cylinder just behind the main mechanism at the front) there is a couple of small other bits of rust round the frame too, which is fine considering the age.

My question is, to prevent it the rust from worsening, do you think there is any reason why something like Hammerite Direct to rust, wouldn't fix the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you talking about the Crome or chassis of the trailer or part of the folding mechanism?

Sounds like the spring cylinder is the brake energy store. Something a bit like this.

I've used Hammerite metal paint smooth silver a few years ago. Didn't think it was direct to rust and had to use a primer on galvanised surfaces. It worked very well and looked good. Needed to wire brush all the loose off first.

Hammerite do a direct to galvanised paint.
Clean off the rust & fill the hole first!

Thanks of the tips, that is exactly what it is navver. I've attached some pictures but it looks like I can do what I propose.

I'm also guessing the same can be said for any points of rust I find on the trailer?

If the trailer has rust holes then they really need welding. If it's surface rust then clean it off and use a cold galvanising spray.
