Its possible you have a tent who's canvas has already been exposed to detergent in which case it will never be waterproof again, even the slightest hint of detergent destroys any water proofer and surface tension and the canvas will leak.
Fabsil and the pre 2008 weather shield and many other canvas waterproofs are Hygroscopic meaning they still allow the fibres to absorb enough moisture to tighten up but repel larger water droplets.

Could I wax the canvas
Its not one I have heard of. The modern Thompsons weathershield does not say it can be used on canvas as the old formulae did, how ever I have used it on an old canvas tarpaulin and it adds a noticeable weight to the canvas and leaves a very waxy coat that turns milky in wet weather (same as original Thompsons).
My thoughts on using wax is that it would fully waterproof the fibres stopping them from absorbing moisture also in the end detergent would break down the wax.
Now you also know why campers get so upset with the idiots playing with bubbles by tents and awnings
