Has anyone ever taken their trailer tent away for the xmas hols, this year the kids have left home and I know I should be a good parent and do the turkey for everyones return, but really I feel like hitching up the trailer tent and going away this year. Apart from the obvious, like lots of warm clothing and plenty of gas has anyone ever tried this before in a trailer tent (we have a pennine fiesta) and if so, any tips. Or am I just plain insane!

I suffer from the same affliction, I think it's called 'camping yearning'. Like, I just dream about going, dream about being in my (pathfinder). I'm doing it now, in the last few days. I've decided to head out this Friday. I haven't been in my trailer for ages and I feel a bit ..... like I NEED to go out.
As for your Christmas trip. Go for it. But it'll be blummin' cold, that's for sure. :-) I think proper caravans have it a bit easier than us canvas topped rigs, but you've got a little heater, and take your hot water bottle. Personally I don't like cold clothes when I get up.....but I know if Camping Yearning gets me, I'll just have to head off, no matter the temp!
Something about the cold seems so much less worrying when getting away from the usual xmas bundle.
I hear you, we had a really good two weeks earlier this year in our little rig in Cornwall obviously it was not the usual camping weather here, far too warm haha. We are off again as soon as the school summer holidays are over, for another week in Cornwall. Just never been brave enough to camp out of season before, though we did a week in lyme regis when it was belting rain and gale winds, still had fun and no problem keeping warm.
I suppose if nothing else it will be an adventure to go in December. Sometimes you just have to! I suppose at worst we hitch up and head home a bit disappointed but gave it a go. Hot water bottles at the ready, easy enough, we have kettle and hook up, also gas and electric heaters so hopefully that will keep us warm enough, just need a bottle of brandy and then we can try to cook a bit of turkey in the mini oven, what could go wrong! :-)
Years ago - 1990s - had a Litchfield and went camping in marchish. Frost on the tent and cold winds on a hill near minehead and someone's cat kept us company. Was fun,not sure I'd do it now with our daughter and ageing muscles. That tent wasn't exactly portable but ended up doing about 6 glastonbury festivals (or a's we know it Pilton pop )
sounds fun, no children to worry about here, they have flown the coop though I am sure they will be expecting us to produce the xmas dinner. This year just for once I would like to try this adventure. We have a large and very soft german shepherd dog who was brought up on a farm, he loves camping with us.
I suppose the worst we suffered was a night in easter one year when we had to take the tent down, the winds were so strong the poles were bending, that was a tent though, not the camper, we ended up sleeping in the car and getting breaky in the local cafe next morning and went home tail between legs.
sounds fun though, much more fun than the usual Xmas and New Year
I think we have to just go for it and if I pick up any tips I will share.
Most are saner than me and have packed up the camping stuff by autumn I fear.
Electric blanket! We even used ours on our last night in France this year in August! They are lovely for just taking away that 'damp' feeling in the tent.
We camped in Italy at the foot of Mont Blanc in March one year. There was about a metre of snow and during the night freezing rain, on the pack up we had to get ice off the side facing the wind.
Had the heater on low all night and we were as warm as toast.
If it is dry I don't think you will have a problem, the worst has got to be rain and drizzle and that horrible feeling of everything being damp!

Hi if you get the chance to own a riviera deluxe underfloor heater, they pop up on ebay now and then,, they are a great winter heating solution, and can be left on all night, I camp in Scotland every December and my Conway Cardinal Clubman is toasty warm all the time.
