Hi everyone, it’s been a while since my last visit, following a series of life changing surgeries in the last 7 years. I’m due to be under canvas again. Thanks to being gifted a Conway Clipper DL, I’m hopeful I can go camping this year.
I was given this last autumn and it was in a poor state, mouldy/mildew on canvas etc, the rubber bands had mostly perished on the windows and pegging bands and it was filthy outside. I was able to briefly open it up and remove any fabrics that I could, inner tents, curtains etc so I could clean, repair and refresh and store indoors for the winter.
I allowed the tent to dry out for a few days and repacked the TT, covered it and left it until a few weeks ago when I had assistance with putting it up properly.
Since then I have cleaned, repaired and waterproofed the external canvas. Mostly got rid of the mildew stains, very slight marking remains now on the internal white canvas separating the sleeping area from the living area/awning. So far so good.
I have replaced all the elastics and clips for the inner tents, and the liners for the sleeping areas, so essentially we are almost ready for our first experience on a TT. I have fortunately gathered a lot of camping gear over the years so at least I’m not starting from scratch with bits and bobs.
Next project is the kitchen unit which I haven’t opened yet.
There is also an additional awning separate from the main canvas which I’ve been able to briefly examine, it doesn’t look in too bad a condition but I haven’t the space to erect that alongside the TT. Plus, where does that attach? I don’t think that there are enough poles left over for me to put it up anyway.
Sorry for the long post, but I’m pleased with everything I’ve managed to do on my own!!
Hi Siobhan, the Conway Owner Club site has some useful brochures https://www.conwayowners.org.uk/conwaymodels.htm for the various models.
I believe the principle of all the various TT models are pretty much the same - a main/sleeping section which forms part of the trailer and a frame supported extension awning which attaches to the main cabin by two zippers on either side which meet in the middle above the main cabin access door. There is an elasticated flap on the awning which covers the zippers to prevent water ingress.
I hope you have all the poles for the awning.
I have the Corniche DL model from 1988 which is pretty much the same as the Clipper but maybe with a slightly longer awning. I still have the manual showing how to erect it. I could scan it and email you a copy if you give me your email address.
Have you a blue butane gas bottle (Calor or Camping Gaz) plus a 28mb regulator for the kitchen?
David
After a lengthy gap I can report that we managed 1 short trip away before lockdown in 2020, there were a couple of leaks in the canvas which I isolated and fixed, fingers crossed, but it has been packed away since then. We are going to try again later this month with a slightly longer trip, this time with my baby grandson and the dogs so this could get interesting.
I found some additional poles while I had it set up on site which I think are for an extended awning at the front but there weren’t enough poles to attach it to anything!
the poles attach to the front just under the light grey overhang, the canvas then overlaps that and you peg it down. from what i can see you have 2 leg poles and one roof support, so your missing 2 more roof support poles, which are easy enough to get hold of from most camping shops as they are a universal fit
(The bit that looks like a 'Y' clips to the side roof support bar on the awning, so the prongs stick out towards each side of the canvas flap, then are supported by the legs.)
Thank you all for your help.
I’ve now bought a 93 clipper dl with an extra awning attached. As we have grown as a family we needed extra space and this looks perfect and has been cared for. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284891381621?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=ZIRIJiP5QSK&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=Kjj74PviQEW&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Anyone looking for a standard 97 clipper dl? Obviously you know the sun canopy poles are missing!
