My brother mentioned today about some new MOT laws that are coming in for small trailers and caravans and just wonder if anyone on here knows anything about it
There's a proposal to scrap the tests for towing caravans and small trailers for those taking car test after 1997. Maybe this is it. It's to free up examiners to test HGV drivers.
I think there is some confusion here!
OP asked about MOTs for trailers and caravans - the legislation is not changing at the moment, so no MOT is required.
Navver is correct regarding driving licences/tests.

Not a proposal this comes into effect sometime soon. The tests stopped last month.
Yes i was asking about MOT's for trailers, its just i have plans for my trailer and roof top tent as some of my camping will include fitting the roof tent to the trailer so was a bit worried about the MOT thing .

There have been various discussions in Westminster about MOT's for trailers and caravans (which is just a trailer with a big box on top!) but nothing is being progressed at the moment.

I've not read anything about trailers getting tested. I saw something about tow bars now being checked as part of an MOT.

Yeah i run a classic vehicle that's MOT and Tax exempt and don't fancy having a trailer to get MOT'ed
Perhaps he is referring to this:
"trailers with an unladen weight of more than 1,020kg with powered braking systems (instead of standard overrun brakes and as well as the required parking brake)"
They are subject to an annual test sometime called an MOT.
There is also a requirement for commercial trailers to be registered with the EU if travelling in the EU and carry their own reg plates.

I've certainly not heard anything about MOTs for trailers. There are always rumours floating around about all sorts of things and this is probably just one of them.

I have not heard about an MOT test for all trailers, just those over 1020kg unladen with powered brakes (not over-run). Two of the trailers I own fall into this category and have to be tested yearly. As far as I know there are no current plans for annual tests for trailers under 3500kg fitted with over-run brakes. I don't see why they would consider a separate rule for caravans, which are basically just light-medium weight box trailers, I think even the heaviest caravans are still less than 2000kg mgw.
Yeah personally i think he was getting mistaken for something that was on fb last week or the week before that was about allowing ppl to tow trailers / caravans without having the towing test as i haven't seen anything about MOT's on trailers and stuff.
I think this has arisen because a dog walker got killed by a wheel coming off a trailer and mention was made that it was unfair these sort of things don't get MOT'd.
Sound to me like the story just grew its own legs!
