As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
We used to have a Combi camp and towed it with a 1.8 Nissan Tino which was no problem at all. They are very light, I think the max loaded weight is 750kg if you have it loaded to the max with all your gear so should be able to be towed by most cars except the very smallest ones which are not authorised for towing at all. Just check the towing limit of the car and if it can tow over 750kg you should be fine but also check the weight of the Combi camp as they may have changed since we owned one.
One thing that makes it difficult to give a definitive answer is that towing capacity is ABSOLUTLY tied to specific car model/engine spec/year/trim level etc. which determine things like kerb weight. And just to complicate things, some models in a range may not legally be able to tow at all, as not type approved to do so! There are also different towing limits for braked and un-braked trailers, not sure what yours is.
The manufacturers brochures should give you towing capacities by specific vehicle.
As a general answer, a 1.6 diesel should have no difficulties towing a lightweight trailer of circa 750kg. There is a generally accepted ratio figure for minimum engine power to Gross Train Weight (that's combined weight of car and trailer), that is a minimum of 40HP per Ton.
What makes a 'good' tow car as opposed to a 'adequate' tow car is a VERY complicated and almost impossible thing to predict, but engine HP, engine torque (and at what revs they peak!) and gear ratios play a big part. Then there are the dynamics of towing, some car chassis work really well, others can be no better than basically capable! I've towed the same trailer behind different cars, and one car you may not know it's there, another car it's a white knuckle ride!
