Hi, just bought thisnew Leisure Battery for our Crusader, supposedly sealed but has vent plugs. Battery was bulging on arrival, removed vent plugs to release gas and seller advises bulging will go after a few days, but....
Is this safe to use in Crusader's battery compartment,
To travel with , charge etc.
All our previous batteries have had no vent plugs.
How do we use and charge this safely please?
'Sealed' refers to not having any electrolyte (acid) top up bungs, NOT that the battery is literally sealed. All lead acid batteries have vents, because gas can be produced when charging, now whether they come with removable 'transit' plugs like yours of not depends on manufacturers construction.
My battery (same brand) arrived with slight bulging, and a hiss of escaping gas on removing plugs. It's been in service around 18 months now and has been fine. I've a sophisticated electronic battery analyser, and regularly check my battery, and it's showing 100% healthy, so no detrimental effects from the bulging. And it seems to have resumed a less 'bloated' appearance.
Assuming it's a standard liquid electrolyte type (not AGM etc), then use and charge as you did your previous battery.
Hi Monty, thank you, it's not an AGM. Its Advanced XD27 dual purpose Leisure battery, 205AH, power plus, identical to one we have used for years apart from these vent plugs!
Our AA intelligent charger does have a fault icon so hopefully that will help.
Can we assume this is safe to use in the battery compartment of the Crusader?
From what you're saying the bloating hasn't completely reduced on yours?
