Hi Mary
We use to have a swan neck tow bar. We preffer the ordinary one. We found the swan neck one can get clipped more easily, as it sticks out further. But they are quite ok, depends what you want really.

We have a witter and can't fault it. We like it better than the swan neck.

I have a swan neck (not me personally)!! I brought it for looks really it's not so obvious, it was dearer than the ordinary one for my car. They do stick out a little further but not excessive.

I had a factory fitted one and it seems very high compared with a normal one.

I have the flange and ball type on both my cars - Witter and Brink.
The advantage of these over swan necks is that you can carry bikes on a towbar mounted rack and tow at the same time. (Watch the nose weight though).

swan necks can also somtimes be of a lesser weight rating, due to the design they cant cope with 3 tonnes!!! which is why some larger cars cant be fitted with them,

WE have a removeable tow bar on our car and it is great. Having had several vehicles with various tow bars this is the first detachable.
Once removed you dont bang your shin or get grease on your trousers.

We had to have a swan neck on our last car as it had a spare wheel on the back. I didn't know you could have swan neck on a normal car!!!
