Hi, me again! Now I know someone out there must have had this problem...
The canvas on my TT has a biggish hole in it (couple of inches). It's inside, so it's not a problem really, but it does allow a draught in, and it gets caught on a corner putting the tent up and down, so it'll only get worse. The problem is that it's right next to where it's stapled to the bed platform. I'd like to make a decent repair - sew on a patch - and it seems I have 3 choices: 1. unstaple it from the platform for another three feet or so, so I can use my sewing machine on it, then re-staple it (disadvantage of this is that given its age I'm worried I'll damage the canvas trying to get the staples out) or 2. use one of those hand-held sewing machines, or 3. get a better idea from one of you!
I don't know if a hand-held sewing machine would be tough enough to handle a couple of layers of canvas - has anyone tried that?
Honestly copydex or one of the specialist fabric glues will hold a patch on so well its not worth the effort of taking it to bits. Copydex fabric glue is waterproof the lot and if its inside that shouldn't be an issue anyway. Most craft shops stock fabric glue.
------------- Good friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget.
Thanks Jan - that'll be the answer then, and my girls love a good nose round the craft shop. I didn't know you could still get Copydex; I remember my dad using it when I was little - heck of a smell but would stick anything, including my fingers!
------------- It wasn't me - a big girl did it and ran away.
I've used similar glue to excellent effect for patches - withstands folding & creasing. I also use a seam sealer round the edges of a patch to make sure.
we used copydex to mend a tear in our canvas and it really did the trick no leaks and no draught. got it from wilkinsons keep it in the camper now just in case.
after the original reply I had a good search and found the Tent and Awning clinic who sell all sorts including patches and the glue, all mail order (by phone, fax or email), nice prices and very helpful and quick service, I'd recommend them, good luck.
