We've decided to get back into the world of folding camper-ing after about 8 years absence. After we sold our 1989 Conway Cruiser we spent our time between an old Sprite touring caravan and mobile home rental.

Our budget is about £3,000 (though we could stretch to £4000), and obviously we'd like as new and as sturdy a camper as money can buy.

Our priorities are more in terms of strength and durability than refinement, though we do require the 'basics' of 2 hobs, grill, fridge, 12/240V (though obviously 240V can be added manually later) and awning.

I can't see us being able to afford a cassette toilet for that budget, nice though that would be, so we plan to use a porta-potti in the awning instead.

So, the question is - would we be better going for a new Sunncamp Venture (which can be bought new with awning for £4000) or a 5 year old (ish) Conway Cruiser or Trigano Randger for about the same money ? How strong and reliable is the Sunncamp ? Is it cheap because it's not as good build, or because it's no-frills ?

I don't know a lot about the sunncamp, but it looks great value.  Personally I would rather do without frills and go for new.  You never know how well a second hand unit has aged even if it looks allright and five years of use is five years off the life of the unit. There is something good about having something new, even if it ceases to be new the moment you drive it away.

Have a look here at these Dandy Destinys. Any Destiny built after 1994 will have a fridge etc. If you want up to date pictures have a look here the equivalent now is a Dimension.

I can't see the logic of paying £1000 more for the continental and more again for the awning.  For £3995 complete with awning the sunncamp seems a bargain.  At the end of the day folding campers and caravans are basic rudimentary designs and to see real build quality you have to start looking at hobbys, burstners and airstreams etc.

I'll have a good look at them at Norwich Camping when I'm near there on hols this Summer (I'm based in N. Ireland, and folding camper dealerships just don't exist over here).
