The permits are free so far as I know and are issued by the campsite once you have booked.

Full details of the scheme and the sites you can use are here.

I'd check the ferry prices as well as the campsite prices before deciding. They can be eye watering.

I looked into taking our caravan over last September. As above the permit is issued by the campsite you book onto. Further research found very little choice of site and what upon investigation of the roads we decided against it. We did however go over by ferry from Poole and rented a studio. Sounds easy but be careful on the ferries - not much space between vehicles - really packed in. Lots oof the places we visited would be impossible to visit in a motorhome much above VW campervan and parking one in some places would be very difficult. However if you can ride a bike then the motorhome would work if the cite you choose has good access. Personally I am physically unable to ride a bike but we did enjoy walking the coastal paths over out 10 day visit.

We went a couple of years ago, not with a m/h, stayed in a hotel. We just bought the seven day bus passes as the buses are frequent and take you everywhere you could wish to go. Just use the MH for sleeping.

As suggested, check the ferry prices. It may be cheaper to go over as foot passengers & hire a car over there, which would also allow you to explore where the buses don’t go. Presumably you’re staying with your sister but if she doesn’t have room, self catering means she can visit you. Or hire somewhere big enough for all of you.

Most people fly in and rent accommodation and get transport on the island. Air passengers to Jersey outnumber sea passengers by more than five to one.
