Hello all. I have the above, it's a high top so can stand inside. I'm thinking about adding a wind out awning as normal self attached ones would be impossible due to the height of the van. Has anyone with a sprinter been able to add a wind out awning, just to keep rain out when the door is open/provide shade? If so, what type (I know nothing) and a rough cost please?

We’ve seen sprinters with awnings, I don’t know if they’ve been done at the conversion by the company or DIY. I wouldn’t be confident to take on DIY, but you’ll find them online by googling: they’ll be Dometic or Thule Omnistor. Price depends on the length you want; guesstimate £300+.
We rarely use ours: it needs a side or front unless the rain is light & vertical and the sun is directly overhead, plus we don’t risk leaving it wound out overnight in case the wind gets up. We do see drive-aways attached to the wind-out awning bar with the awning closed; you get a particular ‘extra’ piece to thread it into.

Our friends had one added to their motorhome, done professionally. Cost about £1000 all together for a small motorhome . Ours was factory fitted & we do use it a lot; we mostly camp in France & find it very useful. Do have to keep an eye on the wind though, even when using storm straps,

Have a look at Fiamma to see if any of there would suit.

Mine is a Fiamma and it was fitted as part of the conversion for my MWB VW Crafter.

Like Fiona W, mine is only used for light winds and light rains, and I have recently purchased an additional sun shade extension from Fiamma as I don't like sitting in the afternoon sun (I ask about sun rise/set directions nowadays).

I too do not like leaving mine out overnight or when I go for a long walk with the dog, unless I can be certain of the weather conditions as in light winds and rains only, even though I always use Fiamma tie down kit with mine.

The 3 main UK available brands are Fiamma, Thule & Dometic. I read a lot of opinions that would suggest I have listed them in order of quality. Fiamma do have great online information on the mounting brackets required & they do a huge range. A dealer can help sort out any uncertainty. I'd suggest it's a 2 person, 2 step ladder job.

I fitted our Fiamma F45 with a mate very easily. I now have a factory fitted Dometic. Quality wise I'd say the Fiamma was more robust but it wasn't without it's issue. In latter years it wouldn't fully wind in the last cm on one end plus the powder coating came of the end caps. I've had no issues with Dometic yet. Most issues I've seen have been on the older model. It's more of an art to put away. It's easy to do wrong which is where some of the issues arise. If the legs & feet are not relocated correctly it'll stop it winding in fully.

Whichever brand I'd recommend a tie down kit & foot plates. Some folk refer to them as storm kits. They're not! Wind it back in if windy.

Dometics are known for the main arms being more susceptible to distortion in wind. There are 3rd party braces that make them much stronger. They work really well. I believe they are based on a Thule device. They are more substantial than they look in pictures.
