I nearly had a financial heart attack when I saw the bill for Mot, Service and repairs to my campervan. It wasn't the cost of the new parts that had to be fitted, they were reasonably priced. It was the cost of labour and Vat which more than doubled the bill. The garage has an excellent reputation and I'd be reluctant to go elsewhere, but still....
Labour was £60 per hour + VAT. I don't know if this is the 'norm', but I could do without it with Christmas coming up.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Labour costs have gone through the roof. I do all the maintenance on my caravan except for the gas side. I'm getting older now it takes a bit longer but I enjoy the challenge.
A plumber that has done a couple of jobs for me charges £75 an hour plus VAT. Both jobs would have been something I would have done myself in the past but now find it easier to pay someone. A caravan service dealer will also have more fixed costs?

£60 per hour isn't bad, I pay £75 per hour and the local Jaguar Land Rover dealer charges in excess of £100.
It's £72 including VAT, so nearly the same.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
The independent garage that we use for the cars & MH (service & MOT) works all hours: owner & 2 mechanics, 8am - 6pm, and they come out to the house if necessary. Don’t charge for the time to diagnose a problem. As far as we’re concerned, they’re worth every penny. I think it’s £60 ph but it’s much less than the franchise garages. And sort out the problem, unlike Arnold Clark (locally known as Arnold Shark - good at selling, lousy at sorting warranty problems in our experience).
I am now feeling so smug. I pay £22 per hour for my mechanic.
I collect him and deliver him home and he also uses my tools. However if he stops for a cup of tea he deducts the time, he refuses to take cash and always provides an invoice and VAT number.
He is Hungarian and used to have a haulage business. He also is very good at gardening

I think my local garage charges somewhere between £50 and £60 an hour + VAT, but I haven't had any work done by them in several months. That may have gone up since.
I try to do as much as I can on both car and van :- oil, filters, batteries etc, even changed discs & pads on van this year to save money. But it doesn't get any easier the older you get.
My garage charges £60 / hour. (£950) for cam belt replacement, new throttle
valve and service.

I used to do the same at one time. Years ago I did everything on my cars, including rebuilding engines and changing gearboxes, but it simply isn't possible today. Too complex, too much electronics, and I'm no longer up to it. I only wish I was.

We bought Mrs. L's car from Arnold Clark in Elgin and get it serviced in their Peterhead branch. We've found them both to be generally very good, so I suppose it's all down to the branch and the staff who work there.
