How you drive any Diesel vehicle, will vastly affect the fuel consumption. Diesel engines are all about torque, and are driven completely different to a petrol engine.
As a lorry driver, we are given assessments of fuel efficient driving, and our MPG is monitored constantly by the company. We are set a average of 8 mpg for a 38 ton artic, and if we do less than 7 mpg, the firm wants to know why. and we are assessed again.
It all becomes clear!
This is why when I am travelling along a dual carriageway at 70mph about to overtake a lorry the driver will pull right out in front of me rahter than slow a little and let me pass before he overtakes.

Pay us more ???? Thats a laugh.
Constant fuel inefficiency by a driver can result in disciplinary action.
Has it really got that bad Jeff? I have to say I am glad to be out of it and retired, even though with the firms I worked for I was always one of the most fuel efficient drivers on the road, and incidently I get 30 mpg on a good run with my 2.8 jtd Ducato.
We've got a Romahome Dimension which is based on a Citroen Relay 2.0 Diesel we get around 32-35 mpg on a run, we previously had a Romahome Duo a small motorhome which is based on a Citroen Berlingo and from that we could get 50mpg!

Obviously, explains a lot.

My 2.8 HDI Auto-Sleepers Executive 2003 is a flying machine & thirsty. The last mileage check I did, returned app. 26mpg. Most of that was over app. 500 miles & mainly using the cruise control, which is a boon if you want to eek out the diesel. But if I drive it as I would my car, the mpg plunges, but she's fast.
Our 1985 Talbot Express Camelot -( the old 2 litre pushrod, petrol, Peugot engine ) - averages 28 - 30 at 55 - 60 mph - - just hard work keeping the rust moth at bay - (perhaps that is why it is so economical ? - its a lot lighter than when it was new.)
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
