Dont let these isolated incidents spoil your dream . All of the advice above is spot on . Myself the wife and 4 kids drive to spain each year and plan it out over 3 days from our home in N London to the Costa Brava . We only drive in daylight hours and i always try to get to a pre picked site by about 6 pm preferably one with a bar ! Believe me when your relaxing with a nice cold kronenburg talking to fellow travellers the last thing you ll be worried about is bandits ! However we would never stay in an aire or  service station as these seem to be the places where these incidents happen . As  for Calais i would nt camp within 20 miles of that place i d rather camp in Tottenham High road !
