Hi Catherine, if your timing belt has not snapped you won't need a new engine. I am surprised the 'mechanic' could not re set the points gap. To check the gap yourself, take the distributor cap off then turn the engine over by hand until the points open. If not, the points need re-adjusted, or cleaned with emery paper.
