Mains tap water is good to drink, bottled water from the supermarket is only mains water thats bottled and look how long that sits on the shelf
Hmmm, it depends on the source of the bottled water. AFAIK, most are from natural springs and the quality are checked on a routine basis.
There is a brand of sterile water for wound irrigation in a plastic bottle and it tastes horrible as there is very little residual mineral content.

That’s why there’s a date stamped on every bottle. Regardless of whether it’s “best before” or “use by”, the date is reliable. Last time I looked, shelf life was about a year.
Our mains water reeks of the chlorine (bleach) used in the treatment process. Even the dog won’t drink our tap water. We all use a filter jug at home to get rid of the chemical smell.

The date is for the bottle not the water, we change our bottle every year.
I have just read the article about some top brands of bottled water, the really expensive ones. Seems they are now having to filter the water before bottling to remove contamination.

What a load of fuss and bother! Water from a site tap will be clearly labelled DRINKING water and has not killed us yet
I’m not asking if it’s safe to drink drinking water. I’m asking how long it’s safe to drink it for. I’m fine filling up at places that offer drinking water. I’ve just only found one place on my travels so far that has had it, hence why I mentioned buying water in a shop. I just wanted to know how long I could safely drink drinking water because I thought I’d be fine for a week like I have been doing but then read somewhere I shouldn’t be drinking it longer than 3 days
We start our trips with 2 5l bottles from Tesco. We use the first one until it's empty then refill at the site taps and use it for hot drinks and anything else except just drinking. We use the second bottle for that, and it lasts us about 3 weeks. (You can tell that we prefer beer, gin and wine.....). At the end of the holiday we throw both bottles away and fill their space with wine bottles.
French campsite water is safe to drink as is, but the taste can vary.
I assume you are talking about filling a large container in the van for all uses.
Maybe if you are unsure, keep a large bottle of water from a shop separate just for drinking. Or a smaller one that fits in the fridge so will be cool.

I would think drinking from a bottle would add bacteria enzymes etc from the mouth and 3 days would be an acceptable time to drink it (maybe), the rule of thumb is once opened 3 days, longer if unopened
However as most of us use bigger bottles and pour water into a cup or kettle etc I'd be happy to drink it for a week or longer if it was kept out of the sun, unopened and I'd be happy to drink it after 6 months or so even longer in glass bottles.
Hence a food group that I participate bans food shelf-life related questions.
Not going to contribute to this thread anymore as it is going round and round in circles, sorry.
