I dislike the CC club of allowing people to book without leaving a deposit as it results in people just booking everywhere just in case they decide to go which is really an abuse. Personally I would like clubs to keep some pitches for book on the day or the week in peak season times. The point of camping for me is to go last minute not to be totally planned. I do appreciate campsites have to make a profit and having a booking ensures they get payment but perhaps they could charge a little less for people that book in advance and in peak season they would not have problems letting the pitch and it would get back to the spirit of camping again.
At one time you had to keep 10% of the site for people on tour or just arriving but now Bank Holiday periods can be completely booked. It seems to be since the new computerised system took over allowing more exact booking. It is still worth checking with the site to see if they have had cancellations etc at the last minute. OR just turning up. Amazing how you can fit people in!!!(Talking about C&CC sites ,no knowledge of CC )
One thing that puzzled me on a BH weekend last year: we wanted to book the Clitheroe site for 2 nights, not 3. Online it showed they had space on the Friday, were full on the Saturday, and had space on the Sunday. We wanted to book Sat/Sun, as our friends were there, so wanted to join them.
Online it wouldn't let us book only 1 night (we thought if we can't have 2 nights, we'll just have 1, better than nothing), even though it was not possible to book 2 nights, as Saturday was full!
Rang the site and were told that we COULD have Sat/Sun, as they had a 'warden's pitch'. I tried to find out what that was exactly, but got no proper answer. However, we didn't pursue it, as we were really pleased to be able to get in for 2 nights.
But it would be interesting to get a proper answer to this.
I think they meant they were holding a pitch at their discretion. Sometimes it is necessary in case of an unusable pitch i.e. flooding etc. Thats why I stated if you turn up without booking sometimes you can get on--but don't tell anyone.
Hmmm! Bookings, no space, problems getting where/when you want to go, lousy facilities (not my words) Makes me glad we've got a MH & go where we like, whenever we like, more so when I've retired in June Caravan Club CLs are all we need for w/end get aways, & Private sites (Adult only) for main holidays. Never an issue with space allocation, booking, or "Little Hitler" (again, not my words) site Wardens. Cheer up one & all, soon be summer.

Thanks Pippa10. Normally we don't go away at BH weekends, but in this case our friends were staying on the site, which is not far from where we live, hence we tried to get on at the last minute.
So, it's always worth ringing up, even at the last minute, to see if there is a spare pitch, when the website shows there aren't any.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
