a lunar telstar will be delivered to use on 20thApril - just can,t wait, Just moving from a pennine folding camper - hopefully we cn go out all year. that's the idea anyway. No alarm system in motor home - wondering if using a wheel clamp wil be of any use? alarms bit pricey. Can anyone offer any advice Welsh Lady living in warwickshire
The cost of an alarm is not much compared to the price of a motorhome. We used the alarm and a wheel clamp when ours was parked outside. Anything that delays the little toerags has got to be good.
Our alarm is a Strikeback fitted by VanBitz of Taunton - specialists in motorhome alarms and suchlike. When you are inside you can just set the perimeter alarm so that if the doors are opened it goes off, but you can move around inside. We set it like this at night. The wheel clamp is an SAS Defender. It's quite heavy, but I (weak female) can get it on and off.
hi, why not get some good locks fitted to the doors to put any one of trys to get in , in the first place. its better than draging wheel clamps about. regards, bob
After reading lots of threads on different forums about all kinds of different security measures, internal lock button covers, bulky lock covers, webbing lashed between the front door handles to keep doors closed, made out of anything from chain dog leads, webbing or steel cable, dead locks and lots of other ways, we went for a cat one alarm system which our van supplier had fitted at cost as part of our deal on the motorhome when buying from them.
All of the doors have sensors on so if opened a very loud alarm goes off, passive detectors in the van can be switched off so that you can move around when in them without it going off but switched on when not being used. All of the external lockers have got sensors on so if opened we would know. Especially when on site if we forget to lock up ( has been known to happen).
We have read a lot about vans being broken into at night while people are sleeping in them, if anyone tried to open any doors on ours it would be like several alarm clocks going off at once volume wise so no way would be sleep through a robbery.
Our thinking was we were spending almost £40k on a vehicle the extra £150 was money well spent for peace of mind and also reduced our insurance premiums, so after a couple of years it has paid for itself in that saving if nothing else.
A good security tip for anti theft of your m/home is quite simple and cheap, if the drivers seat slides forward on runners push it forward and drill a 10mm hole behind the moving runner and use a padlock with a long hook, if it only tilts over the steering wheel do so and drill the frame when tilted. simple and cheap, but a good deterant.
one thing to consider, a thatchcam rated alarm only holds it rating if fitted by an aprooved fitter, who can supply a certificate of its thatchcam rating (usually 2 or 1 for an alarm) no certificate, then no discount from an insurer
Quite correct Tim. Mine was fitted (very professinally) by a mobile fitter, who respected the value and originality of the vehicle and did an excellent job of the fitting. Virtually untraceable job, everything hidden or routed out of site.
NOTE- if you have a canvas pop-top and internal movement sensors fitted, get the MICROWAVE type, not ultrasonics, the microwave type works faultlessly, even when the roof`s up and it`s blowing a gale, the flapping canvas doesn`t set it off.
------------- Life is one big holiday, only broken up by as little work as possible
we decided to get tracker fitted when we bought our motorhome so then if the worst should happen we would be notified of its dissapearance and at least it can then be located by the police... like the idea of the padlock behind the drivers seat might give that one a go
And there's little me sleeping peacefully at night...never thinking about alarming the van (although I have an alarm fitted). Having read all these threads, I reckon I won't sleep at night any more. I suppose I could switch off the ultrasonics. Its just I know what I'm like. If I have to get up with the dog in the middle of the night, I'll just forget about the alarm and then its hee haaah hee haaah ...I'll wake everyone up. Great life isn't it??
