I am looking to buy my first campervan, and after reading the advice and talking to some people, I think the 1.6 TD T25 is the one for me, as I want reasonable economy plus decent cruising speed for commuting plus hols - I have been looking on the net, and there seems to be a few within my budget of around 3.5k, but these seem to be in London or midlands - does anyone know of any dealers or other sources of vans in my area(S Wales) or 50 mile radius of Bristol?
Try one of the magazines Motorcaravan & Motorhome Monthly,Motorcaravan Magazine seems to have lots of VW adverts in their classified section. Auto trader and Camping and Caravnning Mart also should have adverts for you. Also some of the specialised VW magazines may have ads in.
When you are talking that sort of price, your best bet is Admart or Trade it, or any other free ad paper in your area.
When people are selling a vehicle for just a few grand, they tend not to want to pay the expensive advertising costs in specialist motorhome and camper magazines.
I wouldnt be too optimistic in what standard of T25 you will get for only 3.5k though.
--If you want to check prices in Germany look on mobile clic Wohnmobile-&wagen-- clic Alle marken scroll to VW then put T3 on model--its where the best T3s at reasonable prices are these days--loads of people import them--
We used to have a 1.6TD T25, and it was a nice van, but realistically the cruising speed of that engine is around 50-60mph to get around 30-35mpg, that is presuming the engine has not got more than around 70,000 on it as after that it will need replacing. And it *will* struggle on hills :-)
Ours was a 1990 1.6TD Westfalia high top and the turbo boost and fueling had been increased so had a bit more poke up the hills, but it was also a replacement VAG engine with only 30k on it.
I've got a Talbot Merlin that I will be selling for around £4k ( once I find a Swift 630G to replace it), if you are interested.
It sleeps 4 (two above cab and two in dining area), has cooker, sink, hot water, shower, cassette toilet. It's done nearly 49,000 miles, which I think are genuine miles as the guy we brought it from only used it for 2 weeks per year. It is regularly serviced and has a new MOT. G Reg though, so getting on a bit, but in fairly good condition considering the age. There are a few catches on cupboards that need replacing but nothing major. No signs of damp anywhere either.
It has never let me down and I use it nearly every weekend from March to October.
