Hi there, just been to Direct Line to sort out my breakdown cover for our forthcoming trip and have been told that my Hymer 644 is too heavy. They will only cover 3.5 tonnes and I think my van is 3.8 tonnes. Have been to Eurotunnel and already booked my crossing for 3 weeks time and notice that they only cover for 3.5 tonnes also.

Just wondered what everyone else does, as I see a lot heavier vans on the road than mine. The guy at Direct Line couldn't even give me any further advice on where to go (helpful bunch).

Any advice helpful

Dont know why eurotunnel are only 3.5 tons, I go across in a coach, wagons go on eurotunnel, perhaps you would have to pay those sort of prices for same, Good Luck Bob, p.s. Try caravan club there must be someone along soon who can give you better advice

As Scorpio says try Caravan Club I think Mayday don't have any restrictions as such,(doubt they would recover a bl***dy great RV) but normal size M/H  are I believe OK.

You should always check out the specialist Motorhome firms for your insurance - they know what we are talking about and what is involved and will be better prepared to give you appropriate cover - eg better contents cover than you would get from 'car' insurance deal.
The length of vans is often a problem as well as weight - not all breakdown firms [particularly those used by car firms] can cope with the excess. RAC and AA and Green Flag and Europ Assist can provide breakdown cover - just make sure that you read the small print and your length and weight are noted.
If you're not already a member of one of the clubs it may be worth joining just for that - otherwise try
Comfort Insurance / MCIA / Adrian Flux - all have had reasonable comments in the past on the discussion forums.

Good luck

Direct Line were brilliant when they first came out, but now seem to concentrate on the simple straightforward stuff - nothing out of the ordinary and no deviation from their prepared script - typical call centre stuff - standard template rules.

We have gone with safeguard, no limit on the weight of the van and unlimited cover across Europe and even into Morocco where we are planning on going next year.

Hi

We use Safeguard to. Competitve price for both insurance and recovery. Having had to use the recovery service last year we found it faultless and that was with a dfully laden Swift Kontiki towing a Nissan Micra. Top marks

Hi,

I use Safeguard through Swinton Insurance Brokers as they do my car as well, so not only did they match my no claims, the European Breakdown cover was included free. The premium was actually cheaper than the camping and caravanings clubs insurance, and then I also used to need to join the RAC through them which was another £100+ last time for the yearly European recovery. The irony was I only moved in the first place as nobody at the camping and caravanings club know if they could even insure the car and the van, let alone give me a price this year!

Try Adrian Flux Insurance, I`ve got breakdown cover through them, they said the company they use are specialists for the big American RV type m/homes so nothing fazes them (especially my VW Westy camper)
