Hi,
you can't run the van on 240v without changing everything, fridge, charger, lights, everything that is mains powered will be 110v, 240v will burn out most electrical appliances, and cause a fire.
American mains is 110v 60Hz, we are 240v 50Hz, this means even if you use the step down transformer you suggested from 240v to 110v, things like televisions, microwaves, will not work properly, and may suffer damage. Lights and pure resistive loads should be ok.
Having said that, there are a lot of American motorhome owners out there, so it can't be impossible, and I see you're based in the West Midlands, so pick the brains of our local importers, even though I have a European van I know of at least 2 or 3 nearby, google American Motorhomes and see what comes up.
Please take care with any mains, if you are not confident, have the conversion done professionally, or at least inspected before connecting to any mains supply.
Mike
