Motorcycle racks will only take a weight of up to 160 kilo's. So biggest bike you can carry will be about 400 or 500 cc.

Also you have to be aware of your vans payload, some vans only have a few hundred kilos, which will be taken up by the normal stuff you carry in a motorhome.

Also the length of overhang from the rear axel is extremely important, as a long overhang with weight on will cause a see saw effect, compromising your steering as it will be very light on the front end.

Personally, anything bigger than a 50cc moped i would only put on a trailer.

Isnt it annoying when these to$$ers come on here, make one post asking for advice, then bugger off never to be heard of again. Not even bothering to acknowledge the advise they've been given.

Useless ungrateful tw*ts.

Hello

I have just brought a Laika Iveco 4.2, and wish to put a motorbike on the back, I have plenty of payload on each axle.  However I not sure if it will be possible to hang a bike on the back because of the long overhang.  Need to do maths seriously before investing in tow bar and rack.  My husband wants to tow the bike on a trailer, but with the Laika being 7.15metres long and then a trailer, and us being new to motorhoming, I dont like the idea.  We are touring Spain this year and plan to move on a lot so having a trailer seems to be a worry.   But then again having the bike on the back it will have to be legal and safe.  Can anyone help.

I fail to see how a motor bike/scooter can legally be carried on a towbar mounted rack.

Towbars have a maximum download usually in the range 75 to 100 kg and this is far too low to carry either a motor scooter or a motorbike. The vehicle manufacturers also specify a maximum download for the towbar usually in this range. A very few vehicles, such as the Landrover may have values significantly in excess of theses values. My Boxer Van Campervan only has a rated download of 100 kg.

How can a rack with an advertised load in excess of this be legally sold?

Yes, I know what you mean, thats why we are researching the possibilities.  The ones that we are looking at have chassis extensions coming out the side, and not all the weight goes on the tow bar, but we would want a tow bar fitted, so that if we decide we dont like putting the motorbike on the rack we can tow it on a trailer.

Thanks

it is legal because the weight is an even spread , i carry my sons race bike on a rack no problems at all . Like everything else in life if you use the proper kit and i have a super duper frabricated towbar and rack you dont have a problem carrying the extra weight .Oh i should mention i carry it on the rear of a talbot merlin.

Hope this helps someone .
