We are considering buying a Fiat Ducato, Eldiss A class motorhome.  It is an E reg with 58,000 miles on a 2.5 TD.  Having been standing for four years it is in a bit of a sorry state and needs some TLC and money spent.  The main concerns we have are some leaks in the roof and behind the drivers seat as well as the cost of a boiler and toilet - both of which are missing.

We have searched the internet and magazines and can not find another one to find out if it's worth spending large amounts of time and money on.

Does anyone have any knowledge they could pass on to a couple of novices??

There are some very old MHs on the road mainly due to the fact that they are built on good commercial chassis.

I would want a very competent mechanic to inspect the engine/chassis etc. Try your local Fiat commercial employees. Then I would make a very close inspection of the MH......the paramount point being checking for damp. Buy a fairly cheap (B&Q) damp meter or even hire a really good one.

Just out of interest, I didn't think that Eldiss ever did an A Class (very few UK companies do)

If the price suits you....good luck

How much are they asking for it? Also, are you a very good DIYer? If you are, then anything is possible.

You say that the roof is leaking? If the back body has been built on a wood frame then you will be in for a lot of work. Its not impossible but you are going to need to be pretty switched on with what you are doing.

Have a look on www.sbmcc.co.uk There are a few bods on there who have extensively rebuilt "off the peg" Motorhomes.

The main thing to check is the leaks--if the water has rotted the wooden framework the vehicle may be beyond repair

Surely if it has literally been standing for 4 years the engine won't be much cop now will it?  I always thought they needed to be turned over and run regularly?

Elddis made two A classes back then the Auto king and the 300 special (because there were only 300 of them)

On these old motors you can spend, spend, spend and there will still be antoher thing to fix.

if it is in sound condition (i.e no damp and in decent condition underneath) it could be worth having a go at doing it up
