We had a night out in the van last week all was great untill we went to set of in the morning, we were wild camping by the way, anyway the van wouldent start so had to call out the AA ,he tested the battery and told us it had had it's day
Managed to jump start us and we got home ok, my question is what size battery do we need ? it's a talbot express 93 diesel.
Do we just go to Halfords and tell them what it is or is there somewhere cheaper in the Midlands area?
Thank's a lot
Susan

Do you have a seperate battery for the lights etc, or are you using the main van battery only?
If you have a seperate battery, and the van battery has gone flat, is it usually a problem to start? If it is I'd suggest the biggest you can fit under the bonnet, but as it's a diesel it probably has the biggest (heavy duty version) there already.
There's always someone cheaper than Halfords, but if you stick to a known brand you shouldn't go wrong.
Whoever you buy it from should be able to tell you the correct battery for you van.
If you haven't got a seperate battery, it's well worth fitting one.

How did your starting battery go flat? It should be isolated from the leisure side

With batteries I always fit the one with the highest amp-hours, which will fit in the tray.
Also, I'd never buy one from a general dealer such as Halfords or quick-fit etc, they seem to be made to a price with not much lead in the plates, so they don't last long. I'd find a battery specialist locally.

Try here and it should tell you which one you need. My Fiat 1.9TD uses a Type 017 which I replaced a couple of weeks ago, 90 a/h cost about £65.

right I think I found the battery size we need in the handbook, it says 2.5 litre 4 cylinder 75 BHP (54KW) at 4100 RPM.
so i will ring that company this morning and see what they advise.
Thank you Nimrodphil very helpful.

Hi Susan, the figures you mention are the engine size and power output, not really anything to do with the battery. If you select the maker's link on the site I mentioned and then select any other bits asked for it will tell you which battery you need for your vehicle and then you can search around for the best deal, not necessarily the cheapest.

a 2.5L deisel will probably need somthing around a 6-700 Cold Crank Amp battery (a large short burst for starting) if you go to either a battery specialist, or motor factor (not main stream ones) they will have a book with your van/engine in it and its corresponding battery.
Bigger the better for a deisel.

You could have taken a jump start off the Leisure; not good practise but I've done it to get out of the mire

If you go into any place tht sells batteries and tell them what vehicle it is for they will sort you out, also look in the Internet, you will find that it is cheaper. Just select the base vehicle and away you go.
