Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered many times already.  I have recently purchased a 1988 Ford Transit 190 Converted Campervan.  It was built by York Coachbuilders some time age, so not a recognised 'Professional' conversion company.

I am having trouble getting quotes for insurance as everyone we phone seems to ask, "Who converted it" and they want to hear company's like 'Leisuredrive' or 'Holdsworth'.  We are running out of ideas for who to contact now.  There are so many vans similar to ours, surely somebody out there is insuring them??!!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Daniel

Adrian Flux are evry good for Motorhomes of dubious parentage, for want of a better term -  They do a lot of the Self build Motor Caravanners (SBMCC) vehicles and you get a worth while discount if you are a member.

Shield are another specialist in this field

Hi- Being as your van is 20years old, it may pay you to join The Classic Campers Club, apart from many other benifits it offers is a list of insurers who offer very good deals, and they dont all require the vehicle to have a listed manufacturers name.  kiev

There's some very nice vehicles in that Classic Camper club. They used to have a Meet at Hatton when we used it; some very good restoration work

Daniel i had an old mark one transit  and i didnt know its manufacturer ,it was lost in the mists of time, however my local broker found me insurance on a classic camper policy  with norwich union,it had a mileage limitation and they wanted six photos of the van too  but it was reasonable at £120 pounds.,i think the classic camper club has a cut off date of 1987 for membership ,i just had a policy with adrian flux  for my talbot £220 fully comprehensive which i felt was very good.

Thanks guys.

I checked the Classic Campers Club and unfortunately the cut-off date is 1987.  I can't use Shield either as they don't insure anything over 19 years!!

Adrian Flux have given us a quote, but it is a little high.  To stay within my budget I would probably have to buy 3rd party, fire & theft.

Strangely the person we bought the camper from had a policy though Norwich Union, but they thought it was a standard Motor Caravan, when we told them it was a self-build conversion they said they wouldn't insure us.  This indicates the person we bought it from didn't have a valid policy.  Has anyone else come across this sort of thing before?

Thanks, Daniel

I'd shop around if I were you - that sounds like you are being given a spankng for no good reason

We can get decent quotes if we tell insurers we just have a 'Motor caravan', but when they find out that it isn't professionally built by one of the companies on their list (Leisuredrive etc) they don't want to know.

Being a self-built camper we have only been able to get quotes from Adrian Flux, Caravanwise & Norton.
