I have a 2001 sept reg Range rover and have just been looking up the vehicle duty costs £455 per year in 2010!
Do the same rules apply to camper vans on taxing them?
depends on their initial classification, most are classed as commercial vehicles - based on the chassis - and so pay about £175 - are are registered as 'cars' and could conceivably end up in the £400+ bracket. Possibly the top of the range T5 could run foul of this.
Check your log book - oopss showing my age - I mean, of course, your vehicle registration document

AFAICT, they do not, but some motorhomes have been wrongly classified because they were registered pre-conversions. An example is the VW California, which was registered as a type-approved car but should be reclassified as PLG after conversion. You might want to read this for more info.
Allegedly, the DVLA have said:
Quote:
Although vehicles such as the Volkswagen California are being type-approved in the M1 Special Purpose category, at the moment, this should not be sufficient for the vehicle to enter the Grad VED tax class. Therefore, as you suggest, I can confirm that all vehicles with the body type 'motor caravan', whether type approved or not, should be placed within either the PLG or the PHGV taxation class.
Is there a chart that I could refer to. We are looking for a bigger car, but dont want to end up with a £450 motor tax, just to tow a caravan 4 times a year.
For newer models, you can check the emissions database and VED calculator. However, if you're only going to use the car to tow four times a year, you could save a bundle and buy whatever you want provided it was first used before March 2001. Even a 12 mpg V8 gas guzzler costs only £185 to tax this year and £200 next year.
