Hello all,

Am going to the show at Malvern next weekend and looking to buy a stand alone awning, can anyone recommend one?

We have thought about a Fiamma awning, an Omnistor awning (the OH favours) but I think a standalone has to be the best for us movers and shakers, I don't like the idea of packing everything away every time we move the 'van.

Any advice welcome.

Hi Billys mum I recently bought a movelight awning check out photos at this address http://www.flickr.com/photos/eloafer/  if you have a gutter on the back of your van it should fit nicely if not it will go on the side.See the campshop on this site for more details.

We've got a Movelite Square( like Bamso's) that we're looking to sell,if you decide to go down that route!..

It's never been used in anger(..only ever been put up on the drive!  ),as we tend to not stay in one spot long enough to put an awning up!

Hi, Billys mum, two weeks ago on our way to visit Ironbridge we stopped off at Tenthire, Walsall hoping to see many driveaway awnings erected, but no luck. We took a chance on the square Movelite to mount on the back of our Duetto. It was easy to erect and was plenty big enough for us to set up table and chairs, with room to store other things. We did find the many tent pegs supplied a little flimsy for the hard standing we were on, so bought from the site store six more robust longer pegs for £3.60, that did the job on one very wet and windy night. We tried mounting it on the side over the sliding door first of all but found that it was not wide enough. In any case we found it more practical on the rear. I have since made some extension pieces that fit inside the gutter to raise the attachment so that the open doors do not foul the material. We are very pleased with the lightness, and simple quick erecting. It'll even be lighter next time without the inner tent that we don't need to carry. It cost us £150, but Pepes might have been a better deal!!

Hi Ernie..good to see that you've finally taken the plunge,on the awning front!

We would have prefered it if the movelite would fit on the rear of our van.. but as it's a high-top,with no gutter rail and full height doors,it's a no-go...

and no..we wouldn't be wanting anywhere near £150 for ours.... it just seems a waste to have a "new" item,sitting doing nothing! (..At the moment we've got numerous tents,awnings,canopies etc all stuffed under beds and on top of wardrobes!)

Hi Pepe63, now I wish I'd mentioned the Movelite before we set off a couple of weeks ago for your beautiful county! I hadn't been back there since doing a VM's course at the REME school in Ellesmere in 1951. We could have picked up the awning from you. I hadn't been on here for so long I thought no one would remember me for putting so many queries about awnings and getting so many helpful responses from everyone, for which I was very grateful

Our Duetto is '97.

I think with all those tents and awnings you have, Billy's Mum should come and check you out Pepe63!!

Thanks for all the info Pepe63, Bamso & EJCFORD. We are definately going to go down the route of standalone awning. I think that your Movelite Pepe63 will be too small for our 'van. It's a coachbuild so it looks like we would need the XL version? I think (if I am wrong please correct me)

We also need to get one of these 'J' thingies, gutters whatever they are so that we can use it properly. I don't fancy having to through ties over the van, knowing me I'd end up going with them, get tangled up & I know who would have to climb up on the roof!!! 

I see you are in Shropshire? We are heading to Shropshire for the show at 3 Counties Showground in Malvern this coming weekend, never stayed in the area before so looking forward to it. I didn't realise that this 'club' might have a group staying there, too late was the cry! so in general camping. Not bothered though as looking forward to wearing my Pink Stetson as used for the 'real' Dolly Parton concert - can't you tell I'm excited! slightly wandered from the topic - that's women for ya!

Yeah,you're probably correct in thinking that the XL would be a better choice...

When we put ours up,I also tried the "throw over " method of attaching it..and I ended up getting the straps snagged around the skylight!..I had to get the steps out of the shed,so that I could untangle it !  (..good job we were only on our driveway!)

If your not to keen on having a J rail screwed to the side of your van,it may be worth doing a search of previous threads because this topic has been discussed before and I recall there various other "options"(..self adhesive rails/magnets/velcro etc)

Malvern is a lovely part of the country...

Well,as it's never been used,we'd like somewhere in the region of £110-120 for it..but we may be up for a slight "haggle".....)

We're fortunate as we are still able to get to our gutter..but I've seen folk use their wind-out awning to "trap" the leading edge of their driveaway(undo it slightly tuck the edge in ,then close the awning).I've never tried this myself,should imagine it would need two of you?!..

(We were steered away from the XL by the salesman, when we bought ours,as quite rightly, it would have swamped our van!)
