My parents motorhome stalled once last year. When it stalled, everything froze up. The brakes, the steering, even the wheels! Thankfully they weren't on a highway they could have been killed! They had the problem fixed, but now they are still fearful to even drive it anymore. They called many mechanics and all were aware of motorhomes locking up if they stalled, but nobody knows why, or how to stop that from happening. Does anyone here have advice on this?
what do you mean by stalled, was it when you started the engine and tried to pull away,if it has stood a long time the hand breke may have stuck on,and you were unable to pull away,as for the stearing as you say freezing up,if it has power steering and the engine is not running the the steering pump is not turning and the steering will be very stiff,as for the wheels freezing up this could be due to pistons in the calipers and the rear cylinders seizing up if the brakes were applied,my advice is if you leave it standing for a long lime, leave the hand brake off, but use wheel chocks on all wheels back and front, and before you use it after it has stood remove the wheels and check that the brakes are comming on and releasing again, and spin the wheels to see if they are free running and not making any noises while turning,if you can give the van a run at leased once a fortnight and this should help keep all the running gear free.also leaving it standing a long time will not do the tyres or wheel bearings any good.

I guess they stalled the engine going downhill, as the vehicle coasted without the engine running they then had no power steering or servo assistance on the brakes which might have given the impression they got. I dont see how they could have been killed if the wheels 'froze'(as they put it) they wouldnt have been moving, any modern vehicle will do this if you coast with a dead engine, if they cant cope with this sort of thing without panicing maybe they shouldnt be driving a large vehicle.

Agree here, this sounds the most likely explanation, Cant see how the wheels froze though unless its got air brakes and it dropped the air but even then the wheels dont lock immediately,

Let me try to explian better: My parents were driving home from a trip. While driving down the road, the engine stalled/died out and immediately, all of the wheels locked up. They were moving at the time, had they been on a higher speed road, yes, they surely could have been in a bad wreck. The camper is a Mallard. It does not have air brakes. When it happened, they did not coast, nor could they tow the vehicle. None of the wheels will turn without the motor running. Fortunately it was a back road and they were able to have a mechanic fix it right there. So, it is running great now, but they feel that having your wheels lock up immediately if you ever break down is unsafe.
is this the american Mallard motorhome, with auto hydro fluid 4 wheel drive

hi again I have known about prob`s with these in the past as they are auto hydro drives,a friend of mine had one years back and his kept stalling after standing, the fluid if I remember right could get air locks after standing and also the fuel lines got air locks, and then the engine would stall and just about everthing locked up,he took his out at leased once a week for a good run after that and it seemed ok after that but was a bit costly on fuel,I dont know any more info on them,so sorry about that, but I hope you have no more prob`s now.this is like the one my friend had.
