Just a quick line to say hi - having previously camped under canvas and a FC I have finally got back into the outdoor life - we have just bought an ex BT transit which has been converted by the previous owner and have just got back from our first trip (to France!) in it. The conversion consists of a high top, hot water via calorifier (already part of BT kit out), insulation and lighting, carpeted walls and laminate flooring. We are now in the process of making it "ours"! Looking forward to all the pearls of wisdom on here, lots of reading to catch up on!
Hi JudeNJem, well my OH has never camped before so this was a "test the water" trip and thank goodness he loved it. We did not go very far - Dover-Calais then pottered along the coast as far as Le Havre over four days. The weather was superb, it was very quiet and the colours were beautiful. We stopped off and brewed tea at every opportunity, stayed at La Mahone Plage Aire, then St Valerie en Caux Aire (I think) right on the quay side. Got the last space there but were woken at 6.00 am by the motorhome next to us trying to start up - and it took him an hour of trying! Two nights at Camping Municipal in Etretat and I have to say it was the cleanest shower block I have ever come across, and such a pretty site. It was good to get back to France - I lived there for a year when I was 20 and have not been back since (NB not saying how long ago that was lol) - my French was a bit rusty but it came back.
I am used to canvas or folding camper and took bedclothes accordingly - could not believe how hot it was in the van. I think there must be serious insulation in it - well, I know there is as we have photos of each stage of the conversion.
Can't wait to go again. It is full steam ahead now to kit the van out properly how we want it so I guess I might be asking some questions soon.

Hi fourtones! Welcome to a great way of life! You should not be disappointed with your transit. My old dad and my brother never got let down by their's. One a petrol, one diesel. Super reliable from where I'm standing! Have a good look around loads of van conversions and steal the idea's! Just thinking about it makes me want to get my toolbox out. A tip ? Maplins keep a lot of electrical stuff at usually better prices than caravan dealer shops.
