Having problems with the feed pipes to the taps in our motorhome.

If it's been parked up unused for a few weeks, the next time we go out and draw water through the taps, the first few gallons of water come out with a "bad egg" sulphur smell.  It goes away after we've drawn that first few gallons and is OK after that, so the tank is OK - it must be the pipes.  Worried about using Milton or similar because from past experience in caravans, the plastic absorbs the bleachy smell and it stays there forever!

Has anyone experienced this and if so, do you have any tips?

Recently picked up a good tip in Practical Motorcaravanning - after emptying and flushing out the waste tank, add about half a litre of cheap orange cordial to the clean tank - apparently the orange really zaps those lingering pongs.  Doesn't need to be done after each empty, just now and then.  Haven't tried it yet but the article says it really works.

Hope everyone had a great summer despite the weather.

Try leaving the taps open when storing or not using the van. This will stop any build up of smelly gasses.

Worth a try.

Thanks Cath.

Will try that one.  (We're new to motor-caravanning - it's a steep learning curve!).

Try the white powder sold for sterilising home brewing equipment. We used to clean the water tank and piping on our previous 'van and it worked a treat without any after taste. We have also used sterilising tabs sold in camping shops to add directly to your drinking water. I believe these are chlorinated but again we found them acceptable.

Try keeping your plugs in the sinks/shower tray. If there is a smell, you won't notice it!

We add water purifying tablets each time we fill the freshwater tank but I think it's the waste water pipes which smell.

The idea of flushing out several gallons each time before use goes against the grain - what a waste of a precious resource (although it's been plentiful this summer!)
