Hi,

I'm looking to change the oil in my Iveco motorhome. Can anyone tell me the correct type of oil to put in ie; what weight and grade, 15/40w grade B3 etc. It is a Iveco 49/10 H reg 2.5 turbo diesel. I was going to put in the above weight and grade with castrol gtx high mileage diesel oil? Never owned a diesel or a motorhome before so any help will be much appreciated.

Cheers

James

I would argee, most turb diesels seem to run on 10/40 semi synthetic diesel oil, other than the VWs ,BMWs that require longlife oils such as Castrol Edge.

The stuff they put in my Fiat is dearer than liquid gold, last time this year though, will use the semi-stuff then (3 years warranty ).

Be very careful with the semi synthetic - friend had a Nissan which he had serviced by a non specialist who used that rather than fully synthetic  ended up costing £1200 for a top end engine rebuild which an independent engineer said was down to the wrong oil being used.  May not happen to you - why not check it with a commercial dealer who services the same engine?  OR look it up in a branch of Halfords?

the engine will only go like that because the guy who did the oil change did not give it a flush synthetic and semi synthetic are 2 intirely different oils, that aside the main reason was probably down to dodgey oil pump.

Only my opinion but it,s very valid

Maybe he put in the wrong viscosity as well?

I can't believe semi and fully synthetic behave differently, just that fully synthetic can last longer.

I'm pretty sure they mix without problems, semi-synthetic is already a 50% blend.

i wa quite surprised as well but reading the spec sheets if you change to fully synthetic you should flush the motor thoroughly because you are going from a blended mineral lubricant to a full synthetic lubricant and apparently this can act as a detergent .

well thats what the technical spec sheets say anyway.

The op has a 1990 vehicle, if it has hydraulic tappets it may even be better with mineral oil. semi synth may cause them to rattle. it does with 80s VW van WBX engines.

Hi there,

Thanks for the replies, all very helpful.I went with the castrol gtx high mileage. I asked a local heavy goods mechanic about what oil to use and he said it should be fine, although to keep an eye on the oil/temp gauge and look out for any cold start problems. So i changed it today and it started and ran fine afterwords. Only after i drained some oil back out as i accidentally over filled it "Dow".I will be heading up to laggan near aviemore at the weekend, so i will find out soon enough if its OK for the job. Thanks again, its a very welcoming and helpful forum.
