I understand (from magazine articles etc) that clean tap water can degenerate when left in the tank, cysts and other nasties can develop especially during a period of little use, say during the winter.  Having said that we have never experienced any problems and all we have done is flush through with a cleaner before the new season.  We now keep the new Elsan purifier on board just in case but may not have cause to use it.  But we don't go abroad now, so I suppose it depends a bit on where you are.

We drain the fresh tank every time we come home.  About once a year we use the purifying powder just to be certain and have not had a problem.  We boil the water from the tank and use it for coffee etc with no problem.

We also leave the drain tap open as we get home.

Like you we haven't had a problem and sometimes I feel people go a little overboard worrying about this.
