Am toying with the idea of getting one to get w/e's away in the winter (are definitely tent campers in the summer) and would also then use it as a second car. We would have to use the pop up roof to sleep the kids. Is it therefore possible to use in the colder weather or will it just be like sleeping under canvas - ie v cold. Do others use it in the winter with the roof extended and what do you do to keep the van warm without EHU?

cant speak for the VW but the difference in temperature between inside my pop-top and inside the main body of the van is considerable....I have a diesel night heater fitted but once you put the boards down to sleep on it cuts off the warmed air from entering the tent part ...I can put a fan heater up there when on hook up plus I have a large fitted cover (made for my van in japan-unsure of availability here) that can be put over the poptop thus improving insulation but Its still much colder than in the main body of the van and at this time of year without the fan heater I'd imagine very cold.....

I take it you are talking about a Brazilian built modern camper that is like the old 70s type 2. Its a vehilce built for use in South America, not here. You are actually buying a 1970s vehicle. If they aint been fully rust proofed they very quickly get serious rust problems if used here.

If you like 70s VW campers £10k will buy you a nicely restored original, a fair bit less than you would pay for a Brazilian camper. If you just want a modern camper, for what you would pay for a Brazilian T2, you would buy a nice diesel powered VW T4 camper. If you get an Autosleepers Trooper that has a solid sided lifting roof that will be warm in winter.

You can keep warm without ehu overnight with either Propex gas powered or Eberspatcher diesel powered night heater(much better)that will be installed in the van & run off the leisure battery. A T4 will be warmer at night than a T2 I think.

For some lifting roof VWs you can get an insulated blanket that fits outside the canvas.

Sell my camper? I'd rather eat school semolina!

As MartyM says about heating and I would fully agree with him. When our lot do a self-build, the first thing that gets done is proper insulation usually followed by a heater either a Propex or an Eberspacher.

As far as I can make out none of the commercial vans are insulated. It is not until you get onto a ready-made Motorhome that you get insulation: Without it, you will have everythting streaming in condensation in pretty short order.
