Hi fellow campers!

Just bought our motorhome ( collect next w/e) and we're after advice as to good and bad insurance companies !! Had a very good quote from CaravanGuard & Safeguard

Also need advice on a good wheelclamp for when in storage

Many Thanks

Hi

We have used Safeguard for many years, easy plain speaking staff. They were MCM Insurance company of the year again this year I believe. Fortunately never had to use their accident repair service but used the inclusive breakdown option and was delighted with the professionalism of its operation and the recovery via a 40' artic recovery vehicle to Derbyshire from South Wales on a very busy Friday afternoon

Regards

John

Just tried Safeguard and they came out £70 dearer than SAGA. However they were very helpful and easy to talk to. The lady said sometimes they quote lower than saga and sometimes higher.

She did recommend their sister company of SCENIC as they have 5 underwriters to Safeguard's 1.

Will give them a try in morning.

Did try one company in an on line estimate and one of the questions was :

'Do I want to transfer my no claims bonus to the van or keep it with my car'

This really puzzled me as I assumed 'no claims B' was same on all vehicles, did not know I would lose it from car if I transferred it to the van!

Hi,

Did the SAGA quote include full European breakdown cover only sometimes you have to purchase it separately.

Safeguards quotes usually include full European Breakdown cover including those vehicles over 3500kg and have unlimited mileage albeit it probably isn't necessary with most motor homes.

You only find out how good they are when you make a claim.  I havent had to yet, luckily.

Our renewal this year has just arrived - £180inc legal with Caravan Club.  I will make a couple calls to check its competitiveness. This is my 3rd year of ownership and its always been tight between Adrian Flux and Caravan Club.   All others were £400 - £700 for same cover.

I dont do business with insurance companies that only have non-geographic phone numbers either, especially just for quotes.

Hi All

Thanks very much for your comments, as we're under 50 we gave Saga a miss!

In the end we went with CaravanGuard

We pick our new Ace Firenze up this w/e , lets hope this weather lasts

If you wish to check for a national phone number instead of using the 0845/0870 try
saynoto0870.com

I use that all the time, and phone when I have my free calls.

Hi UX08

Glad you are all sorted with your insurance.

Hope your pick up goes well at the weekend.  Looks like the weather is gonna be great down here in Cornwall so make the most of it.

we went with caravanguard for our best deal & we belong to the three main clubs regards wheel clamps if its in storage i would use two  one front one back(bulldog wheel clamps) i will tell u why 14 years ago before i moved i had a glendale coachbuilt stolen  from the side of my house complete with bulldog clamp on the front wheel travellers(irish tinkers) were caught same day cutting off the wheel clamp at an illegal roadside camp in surrey they had used a recovery truck to pick it up ,so i would reconmend u use two clamps if u value your van, better safe than sorry
